"A Red Bear"
2002
Directed by Adrian Caetano
In Adrian Caetano's exceptional low-budget drama
from the new Argentine cinema, Julio Chavez plays Ruben or "The Bear", an
ex-con who returns to his hometown following a seven-year imprisonment for
robbery. In his absence, Julio's wife and daughter have moved in with an
unemployed gambling addict, with his wife unwilling to extend visitation
rights. In an effort to get back on his feet and be a supportive father,
Julio agrees to one last job as a getaway driver for a big-time heist.
Caetano's film is elegant and heartbreaking, and his camera expressively
captures the hard truths of Argentina's sagging economy. His "depiction of
small town life is remarkable" (Richard Pena, Film Comment). In
Spanish with English subtitles.
