"Machuca"
2004
Directed by
Andres Wood

A coming-of-age story set in Pinochet-era Chile, Andres Wood's semi-autobiographical film charts the friendship between an affluent 11-year-old (Matias Quer) and a youngster from the wrong side of the tracks (Ariel Mateluna). Although their bond transcends class divisions, the violent political unrest in boys' country threatens to undo their friendship. Recognized as the first Chilean film to deal with this turbulent period in modern history. "Both sweet and stringent, attuned to the wonders of childhood as well as its cruelty and terror" (A.O. Scott, New York Times). Spanish with English subtitles.  115 minutes.
