"Daens"
1992
Directed by Stijn Coninx
Nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992, Daens is the story of Father
Adolph Daens, a Catholic priest who returns to his village after a long absence, to
discover his fellow townspeople living in abject poverty. Called by his conscience to
speak out against the miserable working conditions in the factories, Father Daens soon
finds himself in a head-to-head battle with not only the businessmen and the monarchy, but
Catholic Church officials as well. Based on a true story, Father Daens is later elected to
Parliament to represent the workers he risked his reputation to champion. With Jan
Declier, Antje de Boeck and Gerard Desarthe. Flemish and French with English
subtitles.
134 minutes.
