"The Red Dwarf"
1998
Directed by Yvan Le Moine
This fantasy from
Belgium uses the title character's personal odyssey to explore universal
issues of loneliness, anger, love and acceptance. Shot in black and white
in an almost expressionistic style, the film follows Lucien, a dwarf
working as a law clerk. When a wealthy countess (Anita Ekberg) toys with
his affections, Lucien first seeks revenge, then solace in the company of
a young trapeze artist. "Extraordinary...a moody gem" (Lisa
Schwartzbaum, Entertainment Weekly). French with English
subtitles. 101 minutes.
