Set in modern day New Dehli, this complicated tale of two sisters-in-law who find love and comfort in each other is surprisingly tender.  Fire won the award for Best Canadian Film from the Vancouver International Film Festival (1996) as well as the Public Award from the Barcelona International Women's Festival (1997).  Deepa Mehta won the Special Prize of the Jury from the International Filmfest Mannheim-Heidelberg (1996).
