"Joshua Then and Now"
1985
Directed by Ted Kotcheff
Based on Mordecai (Apprenticeship
of Duddy Kravitz) Richler's autobiographical novel, the film stars
James Woods as Jewish writer Joshua Shapiro at a crucial stage in his
life. The film is a realistic depiction of his growing up in the Jewish
section of Montreal, with a gangster father (Alan Arkin) and a would-be
entertainer mother (Linda Sorensen), who, as a special treat, does
stripteases for his bar mitzvah. Joshua is an often funny and
poignant portrait. 118 minutes.
