"Maelstrom"
2000
Directed by Denis Villeneuve
This winner of the Best Film, Best Director, Best
Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography Canadian Genie Awards is
a sexy, surreal tale of love, despair, redemption and destiny. Marie-Josee
Croze plays Bibiane, a depressed young woman who falls in love with the
son of the man she killed in a hit-and-run accident. As the two become
closer, Bibiane is plagued by guilt and torn apart by her terrible secret.
Beautifully acted and shot, this poetic tale of moral responsibility is
balanced well by a dash of grim humor via its narrator - a bloody, dying
talking fish. Director Denis Villeneuve creates "a world where the bizarre
is credible and the real turns magical" (Boxoffice Magazine). 95 minutes. |
