"Set Me Free"
1999
Directed by Lea Pool
This sincere
coming-of-age story is set in Montreal in 1963, a pivotal year for
thirteen-year-old Hanna (Karine Vanasse). Hanna begins to cautiously
explore her emerging sexuality after becoming fascinated by Anna Karina's
performance in Godard's My Life to Live. While also dealing with
the conflict between her troubled parents, she grapples with her own
confused adoration for her older brother and an emerging relationship with
her only friend. "Tender and perceptive...Karine Vanasse is
remarkable" (Kevin Thomas, The Los Angeles Times). Winner,
Best Canadian Film, Toronto Film Critics Association. French with
English subtitles. 95 minutes.
