Wen Jiang directs and stars in this sweeping look at life in a Chinese village under Japanese occupation during WWII. Jiang plays a man ordered by Japanese soldiers to house two prisoners. When the soldiers do not return for their captives, the villagers must decide what to do with them. The winner of the Grand Prix at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Devils On the Doorstep was an international hit, but created a furor in China, where the government banned the film and exiled Jiang from the Chinese film industry.
