"Frozen"
1997
Directed by Wang Xiaoshuai
Banned in China and filmed
secretly, without government approval, this bold film offers a glimpse of
the repressed, risk-taking artistic spirit of young Chinese filmmakers. The
story involves a young performance artist, exhausted by life itself, who
decides to make his own suicide his last work of art. Shot in 1994, the film
was secretly transported to Amsterdam for editing and has never been shown
(at least legally) in its native country. "An amazing film in its power and
its daring" (Los Angeles Times). Mandarin with English subtitles.
