Feng Xiaoning's epic biopic recounts the story of Gada Meilin, a Mongolian tribesman who struggled to protect the Horqin grasslands from desertification in the 1930's. Through his battles with local government officials and his tribe's chieftan Meilin has come to be regarded as a kind of modern day folk hero. Xiaoning's beautifully photographed drama features music by San Bao. Winner for Best Film at the Beijing Film Festival. Chinese with English subtitles. 109 minutes.
