A portrait of a remote village in turn-of-the-century China struggling to hang on to its feudal traditions. A wedding brings a 12-year-old girl and a breast-fed, two-year-old boy together. As the girl matures, she challenges outlandish ideas of freedom and ends up with an illegitimate child. Her reality is made increasingly complicated as her boy is prepared to marry a few years later, according to tradition. Mandarin with English subtitles.  99 minutes.
