"Who the Hell is Juliette?"
1997
Directed by Carlos Marcovich
Winner of the Latin America
Cinema Award from the Sundance Film Festival, Director Carlos Marcovich
infuses this true-life story with plenty of visual pizzazz and structural
playfulness. A bold film, partly a documentary and partly a
carefully constructed narrative, 16-year-old Juliet Ortega presents
herself and her world proudly to the camera. Free-spirited, yet
street-wise from her childhood in a Havana barrio, she knows how to use
her sexual wiles and is unashamed about prostituting herself, which she
sees simply as a matter of survival. A meeting with Mexican model Fabiola
Quiroz opens doors to a possible new, and far more glamorous, life for
her. Actress/model Selma Hayek also appears in the film. Spanish
with English subtitles.
91 minutes.
