Academy Award Nominee (1986), Jiri Menzel's gentle observations of commonplace events celebrate small town life and leave one longing to be a part of this "sweet little village". The overbearing Pavek threatens to replace his sidekick, the simple-minded Otik, but he never does. Instead the two continue to work together in this carefully observed portrait of life in this strange little community. Around this Laurel and Hardy-like pair are a group of eccentrics, all bemusedly following their own quirky obsessions. Czech with English subtitles. Color.  100 minutes.
