Emma, the willful and lonely 11-year-old daughter of a cold aristocratic family in the 1930's, runs away by staging her own kidnapping. She stumbles into an unlikely friendship with an ex-convict sewer worker memorably played by Borje Ahlstedt of Fanny and Alexander. This story of the deep trust and love which bonds these social opposites is told with spirit and style, while the handsome cinematography richly evokes the period. Danish with English subtitles.
