An intricately plotted film based on a novel by Ruth Rendell. The tragic death of a single woman's son leads her unstable mother to kidnap another child to take his place. Several unexpected twists and turns lead the film into thriller territory, but Miller never sacrifices the emotional reality of his characters to the plot. Great performances from Sandrine Kiberlain and Nicole Garcia, who shared Best Actress honors at the Chicago International Film Festival. A.k.a. Betty Fisher and Other Stories.
