"Essential Art House Volume IV"
1935-1957
Various directors

So you didn't have the shelf space nor the mad desire to spend a C-note on the entire 50-DVD Essential Art House collection, released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Janus Films in 2006. Well, the art cinema lover in you need not worry. Janus and Criterion have conspired to rerelease these films in individual and scaled-down, multi-volume editions. Volume four includes another six inarguable masterpieces: Gervaise (Rene Clement, France, 1956, 117 minutes); Le Jour Se Leve (Marcel Carne, France, 1939, 90 minutes); Mayerling (Anatole Litvak, France, 1936, 93 minutes); The Tales of Hoffmann (Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger, Great Britain, 1951, 124 minutes); The 39 Steps (Alfred Hitchcock, Great Britain, 1935, 90 minutes); and Throne of Blood (Akira Kurosawa, Japan, 1957, 109 minutes). In French, English, and Japanese with English subtitles.  605 minutes.
