"Farinelli"
1994
Directed by Gerard Corbiau
Farinelli, an
18th-century castrato, was one of Europe's most acclaimed singers. This lavishly designed,
brilliantly costumed film focuses on his troubled artistic and personal life as he
conquers the opera world and has women faint in his presence, yet needs his brother to
consummate his sexual conquests. Corbiau ingeniously recreates the unique castrato sound
by electronically blending a male and female voice; Jeroen Krabbe appears as Friedrich
Handel. French with English subtitles.
115 minutes.
