"J'Accuse"
1938
Directed by Abel Gance

"Gance...was the cinema's only real heir to D.W. Griffith's epic lyricism, and J'Accuse was his Death of a Nation." - Los Angeles International Film Exposition. Newly restored with assistance provided by the director before his death, a version of J'Accuse was first released in 1919 as a silent film. During the late thirties, appalled at the prospect of a second World War, Gance retold his story in a vastly different version to challenge the awful onslaught of history. Jean Diaz (Victor Francen) is a research scientist who survived the carnage of WWII and swears to dedicate his life to ending war, a burden which drives him to madness. When he discovers his work is being exploited by the military-industrial establishment, Diaz summons up the ghosts of the war dead, to bring the world to its senses. Gance's monumental work uncannily anticipated the terrible destructive capability of modern weapons and remains a powerful statement. Featuring Francen, Jean-Max, Renee Devillers, Mari Lou. Scenario by Gance, Steve Passeur. Cinematography by Roger Hubert. Sets by Henri Mahe. Music by Henri Verdun, played by the Paris Symphony. B&W. French with English subtitles.  125 minutes.
