"La Symphonie Pastorale"
Directed by Jean Delannoy
This sensitive adaptation of Andre Gide's
introspective novel is precisely constucted, brilliantly acted and
beautifully photographed. Set in a mountain village, the emotionally
complex story follows the spiritual growth and decline of it's two main
characters, a well meaning pastor (Pierre Blanchar) and the blind orphan
he takes into his home. Initially, the minister is guided by Christian
principles to raise the orphan, Gertrude (Michele Morgan), with fatherly
love, but as she grows into a beautiful woman, he is driven by a passion
that destroys the happiness of his wife and son. Filming in the Swiss
Alps, Delannoy and cinematographer Armand Thirard create a serene
atmosphere that offers a stunning contrast to the story's volatile
emotions. Digitally remastered with new electronic subtitles. French
with English subtitles. 105 minutes.
