"Life and Nothing But"
Directed by Bertrand Tavernier
Set in 1920, this powerful drama unfolds in post World
War I France, a country devastated both physically and spiritually. It tells
the story of two women of different backgrounds who are looking for the
missing men they love. Along the way they encounter two French officers, one
detailed to identify the dead and the other assigned to choose a body to be
honored as France's unknown soldier. Tavernier turns his film into an
incredibly moving journey through the postwar landscape of France, touching
on the deep psychological scars which the conflict has left behind. With
Philippe Noiret, Sabine Azema and Pascale Vidal. French with English
subtitles. 135 minutes.
