"Lucrezia Borgia"
1935
Directed by Abel Gance

French film pioneer Abel Gance (Napoleon, J'Accuse) brought his visual flair and eye for intricate period detail to this historical melodrama. With more than a few dramatic liberties, the film tells the story of the daughter of Pope Alexander VI and the crimes of ambition and decadent private life she shared with her family. Because of the film's depiction of papal corruption, it ran into censorship problems throughout Europe. Also included on this volume are two rarely seen short films by Gance. Au Secours (1924, 18 mins.) is a frightening tale of a man who accepts a wager to spend a night in a haunted house. The film is highlighted by some disturbing imagery and Gance's experimental editing techniques. La Folie du Docteur Tube (1915, 16 mins.) was a major influence on the avant-garde movement. Gance creatively uses mirrors for distorted images in the story of a mad scientist who discovers a powder that can alter someone's physique.  80 minutes.
