"Marius"
1931
Directed by Alexander Korda

Marius, the first film in the Fanny Trilogy masterfully tells the tale of the subject pagnol knew best, the people and settings of the south of France.  César (Raimu) is a café owner in the port of Marseilles whose son Marius (Pierre Fresnay) is a young man-about-town.  Marius loves Fanny (Orane Demazis), the daughter of a fish-monger, but also longs to live the adventurous life of a sailor.  Even though the young couple become lovers and plan to marry, Fanny realizes that she cannot hold Marius from his dreams.  The film poignantly explores the drama and humor inherent in the relationships of these unforgettable characters.  Written and produced by Marcel Pagnol, music by Francis Gromon.  French with English subtitles. B&W. 125 minutes.
