Directed by Julien Duvivier
A major film by one of
the most underrated of early French directors, Panique is the story of a vicious
young crook who robs and murders an elderly woman in a fairground and then conspires with
his girlfriend to put the blame for the crime on a bearded recluse, played by the great
actor Michel Simon. Based on the novel by Charles Simenon, with a script by one of the
great French screenwriters, Charles Spaak, Panique ends with a harrowing climax in
which Simon is hounded to death by an angry mob. French with English subtitles.
