"Zou Zou"
1934
Directed by Marc Allegret
Also featuring Jean
Gabin, who was just on the brink of international success, Zou Zou is a
Warners-style backstage musical in which a talented Cinderella (in this case a laundress
played by Josephine Baker) takes the place of the lead on the opening night and saves the
show. Clearly a star vehicle for Baker, she appears at her best here, as a glamorous,
larger-than-life sophisticate. Watch for her spectacular rendition of "Haiti"
that will remain indelible in everyone's memory. French with English subtitles.
