"Nosferatu the Vampyre"
1979
Directed by Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog's
retelling of the Dracula legend is truly an homage to F.W. Murnau's 1922
silent classic. Both reverent and funny, the film captures much of the
look (including Klaus Kinski's make-up) and atmosphere of the original,
while subtly crafting a mood all its own. Some of the scenes are
shot-for-shot reproductions of Murnau's images, while others are pure
Herzog. Isabelle Adjani plays the beauty that Kinski's vampire pursues,
with Bruno Ganz as her unlucky husband. Letterboxed. German with English
subtitles. 107 minutes. |
