"Pygmalion"
1938
Directed by Anthony Asquith/Leslie Howard
A great version of George
Bernard Shaw's play, later remade as the musical My Fair Lady. Leslie
Howard is exceptional as the professor, and Wendy Hiller could not be better
as the Cockney-speaking pupil. "Above all the film is remarkable in that it
strengthens rather than dilutes Shaw's insistence on language as the vital
instrument of power and oppression" (Robert Murphy, Time Out Film Guide).
