"Kontroll"
2004
Directed by Nimrod Antal
The milieu of Nimrod Antal's stylish debut is the
strange subterranean labyrinth of the Budapest subway system, the
second-oldest in the world. Sandor Csanyi stars as the leader of a group
of beleaguered ticket inspectors, assigned to patrol sections of the
tracks. Deployed by higher powers, the petty bureaucrats experience abuse
and humiliation as they attempt to regulate a train system populated by
harmless patrons and hooded madmen alike. "A thoroughly satisfying,
rambunctious entertainment that also subtly works on philosophical and
spiritual levels" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Nominated for
an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (2004). Hungarian with English
subtitles.
