The influence of Italian neorealism can be seen in
this feature by the major Indian director Bimal Roy. A farmer and his wife
are thrilled when two years of drought finally come to an end, but their
happiness is fleeting. The landowner wants his land back so that he may
build a factory there and he gives the farmer only three months to pay off
his debts before confiscating the land. The farmer and his family leave for
Calcutta, looking to earn the needed money before the deadline, but illness
and other hardships stand in their way. Hindi with English subtitles.
