"Garam Hawa"
1975
Directed by M.S. Sathyu
The story centers around a middle-aged Muslim shoe
manufacturer who must either leave his homeland of Agra, where he has lived
for generations, or remain there to face the carnage threatening to ravage
the new republic. Sathyu's first film received critical acclaim for its
masterly handling of the controversial theme of the partition of India
during independence from British rule and the Muslim dilemma. Although the
film's producers anticipated a hostile reception, it went on to win a
national award for serving the cause of national integration. "The film
remains a landmark for its sensitive portrayal of an essentially human
problem emanating from forces of history and politics beyond the
individual's control" (Shampa Banerjee, Anil Srivastava, One Hundred
Indian Films). Hindi with English subtitles. 150 minutes. |
