"Arisan! (The Gathering)"
2003
Directed by Nia Di Nata
A brave and biting film from Indonesia, Nia Di Nata's
acclaimed satire peels back the facade of Jakarta's nouveau riche to reveal
a cesspool of adultery, materialism, and bickering. The film centers on
Sakti, a young architect who discovers that he's gay after meeting a
handsome TV producer. But their flirtation causes a scandal at the
traditional Arisan gatherings where women meet to gossip. The first
Indonesian film to portray an openly gay kiss between male leads, this is a
witty, intelligent, and remarkably well-observed comedy. Indonesian with
English subtitles.
