International Film Festivals


  • AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival - The American Film Institute's annual festival is the longest-running film festival in Los Angeles.  Takes place annually in November.
  • Afrika Film Festival - Belgian film festival held in the city of Leuven.  Presenting documentary, fiction, and short films from African film-makers.
  • Anchorage International Film Festival - Features over 170 independent films from around the world during the month of December.
  • Animate the World - The UK's only film festival presenting exclusively animated films for children.  Workshops are available during the festival, which takes place in London.
  • Antelope Valley Independent Film Festival - Presents short and feature films of all formats and genres.  All films are screened in their original formats.  Spring festival and fall festival.  Spring dates are in May, fall dates run from August through November.
  • Antimatter Festival of Underground Short Film & Video - Underground, non-competitive, commercial-free film festival in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
  • Art Film Festival - Presents viewers with art films from all over the world.  Held annually in Trenčianske Teplice & Trenčín, Slovakia.
  • Artsfest Film Festival - Accepts animation, documentaries, narrative, experimental, and any other types.  Festival charges no admission, and is presented by FilmSpeak.com & Moviate Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Ashland Independent Film Festival - Presented by the Southern Oregon Film Society.  Festival is open to all genres, themes, and lengths.
  • Barcelona Asian Film Festival - Annual festival in its 10th year, located in Barcelona, Spain.
  • Berkshire International Film Festival of Massachusetts - BIFFMA showcases independent features, shorts, documentaries, and family films, as well as providing panel discussions and other special events.  Festival runs each May.
  • Berlinale - Now in their 59th year, more than 350 films are shown every year.  Berlin's largest cultural event, happens in February.
  • Big Bear Lake International Film Festival - Dedicated to showcasing independent feature films, short films, student films, animation, family, and documentaries.  Also hosts a screenplay competition.
  • Big Island Film Festival - Festival held annually on the "Big Island" of Hawaii.  Presents independent narratives.  Takes place in May.
  • Boulder Adventure Film Festival - Primarily presents conservation-oriented documentaries, exploratory, and extreme sports productions.  They mostly show short films 30 minutes or less, but feature-lengths are always accepted. Located in Boulder, Colorado.  Festival takes place in April.
  • Boulder International Film Festival - Festival encourages young filmmakers to jump on board.  Takes place each February.
  • Box[ur]shorts Film Festival - A new festival dedicated to makers of short films.  Official selections are made year-round and are broadcasted on an LCD screen inside a box that can be placed anywhere people have time to watch a short film.  Present locations in Los Angeles, New York City, Basel, Switzerland.  New locations in Hiroshima, Japan and Santa Monica, CA.
  • Bra International Short Film Festival - Biennial event that promotes short films from Italy and beyond.  Takes place in Piedmont, Italy.  Occurs every other spring.
  • Bridge Fest - Presents feature length, short, and animated films from all around the world.  Takes place between May and June every year, in Vancouver, Belgrade, and Trebinje.
  • Britspotting - Presents British and Irish cinema in Germany and Switzerland.  Occurs each spring in Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart.
  • Brooklyn Arts Council International Film and Video Festival - Event has been running annually for 41 years, making it the longest-running event of its kind in Brooklyn.  Features films and videos made by independent, college student, and youth filmmakers, locally and internationally.  Takes place in May.
  • Bucharest International Film Festival - Young international film festival now in its third year.  Runs in early-mid April in Bucharest, Romania
  • Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema - Festival offers public exhibition of films that are not screened or distributed in the local circuits.
  • Calgary International Film Festival - For 7 years now, this film festival has been bringing quality cinema to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Typically runs in September.
  • Cannes International Film Festival - Festival aims to promote and display quality film pieces that have somehow played a role in the evolution of cinematography and filmmaking.  Grown to be the world's most prestigious film festival.  Takes place each May in Paris.
  • Cellu L'Art - This festival showcases short films in the city of Jena, Germany.  Festival happens in April.
  • Chicago International Documentary Festival - Ten-day festival explores thought-provoking documentaries from around the world.  Festival occurs each May.
  • Chicago Latino Film Festival - Presents films from Latin America, Portugal, Spain, and the United States.  Takes place in April.
  • Chicago Underground Film Festival - 2009 will be their 16th year.  Typically runs in October/November.
  • Cine Las Americas Film Festival - Located in Austin, Texas, this festival, now in its 11th year, presents narrative and documentary films from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean.  Includes a free day, screening youth-made films and other family-friendly films.  Festival usually occurs near the end of April.
  • Cinéfest - Takes place right after Toronto's film festival in Sudbury, Ontario.  Takes place in September.
  • Cinemerge - Festival in its fourth year, showcasing films of all genres.  Includes games, panels, raffles, workshops, and guest meet and greets.  Takes place in Springfield, Missouri near the end of May.
  • Cinevegas - Annual festival showcasing world premieres and celebrity tributes.  Festival occurs in June.
  • Cinevent - Unique festival showcasing rare, silent/early sound films.  The Midwest's oldest and largest classic film festival, in Columbus, Ohio, takes place on Memorial Day weekend.
  • Con-Can Movie Festival - Festival showcasing short films no longer than 20 minutes in length.  Free entry.  Located in Tokyo, Japan.  Schedule varies by film genre, see schedule on their website.
  • Cordoba Animation Festival - Biennial festival located in the city of Cordoba, Argentina.  Presents video, film, Internet and TV animation shorts.  Competitive and non-competitive screenings with special interest in Latin American, school production, and independent animation.  Most activities are free.  Next festival is in 2009.
  • Crossing Europe - Festival located in Linz, Austria, presenting the work of young, unconventional European directors.
  • Crossroads Film Festival - Located in Jackson, Mississippi.  Festival accepts features, shorts, student and youth-made films, documentaries, animations, and experimental films.
  • Damah Film Festival - Festival explores spiritual experiences in film.  No film exceeds 30 minutes, and they are open to any genre.  Culver City, California.
  • Dances With Films - Allows only "unknown" actors, directors, and filmmakers to submit entries.  Takes place in July.
  • Darklight Symposium Film Festival - Festival specifically aimed at people who are interested in film, art, programming, the Internet, networking communities, digital arts, gaming, animation, music and the entertainment industries.  Occurs in June in Dublin, Ireland.
  • Dawson City International Short Film Festival - North America's northern-most film festival presents films no longer than 35 minutes to an enthusiastic crowd.  Takes place in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada during each Easter weekend.
  • DC Comedyfest - Presents stand-up, sketch, short film and improv comedy in eight venues during the month of April.
  • Docaviv - Documentary-centric film festival located in Tel Aviv, Israel.  Presents documentaries of all different subjects from all around the world.
  • Documentary Film and Video Festival - Takes place in Vancouver, Canada at the end of May.
  • Dubrovnik International Film Festival - Includes a feature-length competition, a short film competition, and a documentary competition.  Takes place in Dubrovnik, Croatia during early October.
  • Ebertfest: Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival - Showcases overlooked films, genres, and formats that don't receive much attention.  Located in Champaign, Illinois.
  • Edmonton International Film Festival - Part of the Canadian film circuit, this film festival shows independent features from around the world.
  • Eerie Horror Film Festival - Originally part of the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival, EHFF was so successful, it became its own separate festival.
  • Eilat Film Festival - Annual festival held in the city of Eilat, Israel.  Presents full-length feature films, from Israel and around the world, and children's films.
  • End of the Pier International Film Festival - Festival categories include short drama, short documentary, short animation/experimental, and feature-length.  Located in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, UK.
  • European Cinema Festival of Lecce - Showcases full-length feature European films from all around Europe, in Lecce, Italy.
  • European Media Art Festival - Open to all experimental films and technological innovations, held in Osnabrueck, Germany.
  • Fantasy Worldwide International Film Festival - Showcases fantasy, world mythologic, mystic, science fiction, historical fiction, and legend films in Toronto, Ontario.
  • Festiberico - Festival located at the Filmhuis Lumen in Delft, Netherlands.
  • Festival of Central and Eastern European Film - Seventh edition of the annual festival held in Wiesbaden, Germany.
  • Festival du Nouveau Cinema - Held annually in Montreal, Quebec.  35th edition.  Showcases new trends in cinema and new media.
  • Film Festival Maastricht - Annual festival held in Maastricht, Netherlands, presenting a varied assortment of films, some with Dutch subtitles, some with English subtitles.  Most are avant-premieres.
  • Filmfest Dresden - Presents animated and short films from around the world in the city of Dresden, Germany.
  • Filmstock International Film Festival - Annually, June 1st - 15th in Luton, England.  Includes an exciting international short film competition, independent world features, discussions, special events, and much, much more.
  • Flanders International Film Festival - 35th year. Over 200 films will be shown this year, with their focus on the impact of music in film.
  • Flashforward Film Festival - This festival is an online competition and live awards ceremony showcasing and celebrating the best work on the Web.
  • Florida Film Festival - Located in Orlando, Florida, this festival showcases the best in American independent and Foreign films.
  • Forest Short Film and Video Festival - Annual festival located in Portland, Oregon that showcases short films ranging from 90 seconds to thirty minutes in length.
  • Gasparilla Film Festival - Annual festival held in Tampa, Florida accepting and showing features of all genres.
  • Great Lakes Independent Film Festival - Festival held in Erie, Pennsylvania that accepts films of almost any length and genre.
  • Havana Film Festival in New York - Showcases films from Cuba, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
  • Heart of Gold International Film Festival - Showcases thought-provoking, nourishing features, whether they bring hilarity or whimsy.  Takes place in the Cooloola Shire of Queensland, Australia.
  • Helsinki Film Festival - Finland's largest film event, held annually in their capital city.
  • Hollywood Black Film Festival - This annual festival is held in Beverly Hills, California, typically in June.
  • Humboldt International Film Festival - Organization holds film screenings, concerts, and open mic performances leading up to the film festival.  2009 is year number 42.  The oldest student-run film festival in the world.  Located in Arcata, California.
  • Independent Film Festival of Boston - Showcases the best independent films from around the world.  Mixes shorts, features, and documentaries with lower ticket prices than Hollywood movies.
  • Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles - Annual festival presents features, shorts, and documentaries from Indian and international filmmakers in Hollywood, California.
  • Indianapolis International Film Festival - Screening over 500 films from over 50 countries this year.
  • International Family Film Festival - A non-profit organization that presents entertaining, engaging, and educational films from all around the world.  Takes place at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, California.
  • International Short Festival Oberhausen - 53rd year.  One of the world's most respected film events, this festival features over 400 films and is open to just about any genre and format.
  • International Videofestival Bochum - Festival located in Bochum, Germany, with an international competition, contests, program-specials, and parties.
  • Italian Film Festival - Takes place over six weekends through October and November.  This is their 31st year.  Operates in the San Francisco Bay area.
  • Johns Hopkins Film Festival - Non-profit organization run by JHU students in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee - Enhancing opportunities for filmmakers. Sponsors monthly screenings of independent films and the Kansas City Filmmaker's Jubilee.
  • Karlovy Vary International Film Festival - 43rd year.  The KVIFF is a non-specialized competitive festival.  The only Category A film festival in the Czech Republic.
  • Kingston Canadian Film Festival - Celebrates the best in Canadian cinema.  It's the largest showcase of Canadian films in Canada.  It runs annually in early March.
  • Long Beach Film Festival - Held annually in August in Long Beach, CA.
  • Magnolia Independent Film Festival - Takes place in Starkville, Mississippi.
  • Malibu International Film Festival - Scheduled annually during the American Film Market (AFM).  Showcases American and International independent cinema.
  • Maui Film Festival - Screenings at the Wailea resort and other island venues.
  • Midwest Independent Film Festival - Event held on 1st Tuesday of every month in Chicago, IL.  The largest monthly film festival in the country.
  • Mill Valley Film Festival - Known as the filmmaker's festival.  Runs annually each October.
  • Milwaukee Short Film Festival - Festival with an international reach, organized to give greater exposure to emerging independent (and student) filmmakers. The festival is in its 12th year and boasts numerous jury and audience awards.
  • Molodist International Film Festival - Takes place in Kyiv, Ukraine.  This is their 39th year.  The oldest film festival in the region.
  • Montclair International Film Festival - Presents features and shorts from all around the world.  Located in Montclair, New Jersey.
  • Moondance International Film Festival - Promotes and encourages screenwriters and  independent filmmakers, in any genre, including feature films, animation, documentaries and short films.
  • Movieside Film Festival - The world's largest short film festival.  No film exceeds 20 minutes in length.  Located in Chicago, Illinois.
  • Myrtle Beach International Film Festival - Festival excludes no genre, with a special "Anything Goes" category.
  • Nantucket Film Festival - 2009 will be their 14th year.  Screens independent, studio-produced, documentary, foreign, and short films in every genre.
  • Napa Sonoma Wine Country Film Festival - Renowned for its "Films al Fresco™" screenings under the stars featuring International Features and Shorts, films on the Arts, Cinema of Conscience, Master Classes and, of course, wine tasting galore.
  • Nashville Film Festival - Winners have a chance to win an Academy Award, among other prizes.
  • New York Asian Film Festival - This event is Subway Cinema's flagship event, taking place every June.  America's leading showcase for popular Asian cinema.
  • New York International Children's Film Festival - Runs throughout the year.  Since 2000, all screenings have sold out in advance.
  • New York International Independent Film and Video Festival - Screens films in New York and in Los Angeles.  Festival hosts film, music, and art events.  Films screened range from high-profile to novice-submitted works.
  • New Zealand Film Festival - Ongoing throughout the year at various locations in New Zealand.
  • Newark Black Film Festival - Now in their 33rd year, this film festival boasts free admission and is the longest-running black film festival in the United States.
  • Newport Beach Film Festival - Screens over 300 films from 30 different countries.
  • Newport International Film Festival - Considered a "low-key Cannes," this festival is entering its 11th year. Newport, Rhode Island.
  • NSI FilmExchange Canadian Film Festival - Annual celebration of Canadian screen achievement hosted each March in Winnipeg, Canada.
  • NW Film & Video Film Festival - 2009 is their 36th year running.  Accepts entries from permanent residents of AK, BC, ID, MT, OR, and WA of any length or genre.  No entry fee.
  • Palm Beach International Film Festival - Listed as one of the top 25 film festivals in the world.
  • Palm Springs International Film Festival - Annual festival entering its 20th year in 2009.  Features a short film festival in August.
  • Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) - Largest film festival in Africa.  2009 will be their 40th year.
  • Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema - Showcases domestic and international cinema.  Runs in late March, typically.
  • Portland Documentary and Experimental Film Festival - Presents non-narrative film and video in documentary and experimental genres.
  • Red Bank International Film Festival - Located in New Jersey and is presented by the Freedom Film Society.
  • Rhode Island International Film Festival - One of the top ten international film festivals in the United States.
  • Riverside International Film Festival - Presents international feature, short, and documentary films.
  • Rochester International Film Festival - This longest-running independent film festival is admission-free.  2009 will be their 51st year.
  • Rose d'Or Festival - 47th edition of the annual festival located in Lucerne, Switzerland.
  • San Diego Film Festival - Film festival occurs during the American Screenwriters Association's annual conference in San Diego.
  • San Diego International Children's Film Festival - Showcases over 50 short films from around the world made for children.  Admission is free for everyone.
  • San Francisco International Film Festival - Presenting almost 200 films from over 50 different countries, fiction and documentary, with an emphasis on non-nationally distributed films.
  • Santa Fe Film Festival - Presents a very large variety of independent features and shorts.  Six categories, including an international and "Southwest Showcase" category.
  • Seattle International Film Festival - One of the largest film festivals in the world.
  • Short Film Festival of Los Angeles - Non-censored, uninhibited look into short film.  All films screened are under 30 minutes in length.  All films are screened in the same digital format. 
  • Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival - Presents new independent cinema in the form of features, shorts, documentaries, and animation.  Located in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Sin Fronteras Film Festival - Mostly Latin-made films are screened at this festival.  Their mission is to promote awareness of Latino cultures through film.  Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • Slamdance Film Festival - Annual guerrilla international film festival.  About 55 shorts and 30 features are shown each year.
  • Soualiga Film Festival - Two-day festival of movie premieres, documentaries, short films, and workshops.  Takes place near Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
  • Stockholm Film Festival - Most films screened have English subtitles.  Over 170 films are shown each year from over 40 countries.
  • Sydney Underground Film Festival - Festival showcases underground and independent films of any length, genre, and content.  Rejects from other film festivals get AU$5.00 off their entry fee.
  • Syracuse International Film and Video Festival - Screens films of all formats and all genres in Syracuse, New York.
  • Telluride Film Festival - Takes place every Labor Day weekend.  Festival program isn't revealed until just before the festival dates.  Located in Telluride, Colorado.
  • Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival - Festival boasts full-length features, shorts, documentaries, animation, and student productions, with a unique music competition.
  • The Three Americas Film Festival - Accepts films from North, Central, and South America.  Held each year in Quebec City, Quebec.
  • Tiburon International Film Festival - Festival designed to heighten cultural awareness and to promote tolerance between people from all backgrounds.
  • Toronto International Film Festival - 33rd edition of the festival is set to take place in September.  Supports films from Canadian filmmakers as well as international film.  Over 350 films were screened at their 2008 festival.
  • USA Film Festival - 39th year running.  Festival located in Dallas, Texas, in April.
  • Venice International Short Film Festival - Presents a collection of short films, some in categories that require films no longer than 5 minutes, others no longer than 30 minutes.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University French Film Festival - Showcases French films on an American stage.  Presents shorts, features, even children's films, all are French and many are American premieres.  Takes place each spring in Richmond, Virginia.
  • Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival - The largest environmental film festival on the West Coast.  Hosted and organized by the South Yuba River Citizens League, festival inspires and motivates its guests to make a difference.  Happens in Nevada City, California.
  • World Wide Short Film Festival - Presents Canadian and internationally-made short films.  Award-winning films from the festival are eligible for consideration by the Academy Awards.  Toronto, Ontario.
  • Worldfest Independent Film Festival - Located in Houston, Texas, this festival showcases feature-length and short films.
  • Zanzibar International Film Festival - Non-governmental organization committed to support and promote the arts and culture of the Dhow Region.
