"The Runner"
1984
Directed by Amir Naderi
In this
semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, Amiro (Majid Mirumand), an
illiterate 13-year-old boy, lives alone in a beached ship outside a port
city and earns a living selling ice water and shining shoes in a sailors'
cafe. The hyperactive and inquisitive boy dreams of journeys and
victories, yelling at ships or planes as they pass. His thirst for
knowledge is quenched when he attends an evening school, and he attains
victory running races with his peers. "An eloquent statement about
desire, struggle, and the need for relief" (Georgia Brown, The
Village Voice). Farsi with English subtitles. 94
minutes.
