"The Sealed Soil"
(Khak-e-Sar Beh Morh)
1977
Directed by Marva Nabili
The first Iranian
feature by a woman, Marva Nabili's brave film focuses on a young woman who is confronted
with change in pre-revolutionary Iran. She rejects a number of suitors, inviting the
displeasure of her family. Soon the rigid orthodoxies of fundamentalist Islamic life prove
too much for her and she faces extreme measures (including an exorcism). This film began
shooting just before the revolution and had to be smuggled out for completion and
distribution. Farsi with English subtitles.
