"A Love Divided"
1999
Directed by Sydney Macartney
The hostilities between
Catholics and Protestants in Ireland reach a boiling point in the
controversy over a mixed-faith marriage in this fine drama based on true
events. Set in a remote Irish village in the 1950s, the film recounts the
conflict over the schooling of the couple's children in the mostly
Catholic community. The mother refuses to bow to the pressure of the local
priest, who insists the children attend Catholic school. Dismayed by her
husband's lack of support, she flees to Scotland with her children,
spurring a wave of anti-Protestant actions and violence. "...a small movie
that tells a big story...It humanizes an ancient struggle that too often
has been portrayed merely in political terms" (Constance Gorfinkle, The
Patriot Ledger).
