"Besieged"
1999
Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci
Bernardo Bertolucci's provocative
character study about an introverted concert pianist and composer who
takes in an African woman in exile as his housekeeper. Their
relationship intensifies as the pianist declares his love for the
woman, whose husband is a political prisoner. Of Bertolucci's work
here, Jonathan Rosenbaum of The Reader said it is "a mosaic of
images and singular editing patterns--it's the most interesting thing
he's done in years, as well as the most pleasurable." Starring David
Thewlis and Thandie Newton. In English. 92
minutes.
