"Era Notte A Roma"
1960
Directed by Roberto Rossellini
A major film of
Roberto Rossellini: three soldiers, an American, Englishman and Russian, having escaped
from a concentration camp during the final months of Rome's occupation, are given refuge
in a young woman's loft. She and her fiance survive through various black market schemes.
A defrocked priest, Tarcisio, suspects the girl's complicity with Allied soldiers, but is
willing to go along with it in return for favors. The woman resists, and Tarcisio causes
the scattering of the group and the death of the Russian and several compatriots. In his
book on Rossellini, Guarner said that from the point of Era Notte a Roma Rossellini
no longer merely observed, but began to analyze: "Temporal and spatial leaps occur
with utter simplicity and bridge ancient and modern cultures." English, Russian,
German and Italian with English subtitles.
145 minutes.
