Rossellini's last and darkest film with Ingrid Bergman shows a marriage stumbling across lines of suspicion, mistrust and fear. The husband of the story attempts blackmailing his wife in an effort to force her into a confession. She tolerates this blackmail because of an abstract guilt over her adulterous actions. Rossellini's visual motifs, darkness and shadows, create the moral muddle through which the characters move. Filmed in English.  84 minutes.
