"Intervista"
1987
Directed by Federico Fellini
Fellini's movie
combines the film-within-a-film, the essay memoir, a playful recollection of previous
works and an eerie conflating of the past and present in this surreal and imaginative
distillation of a man's life and work. As Fellini prepares to adapt Kafka's Amerika,
his every move and gesture is captured by a Japanese documentary crew. The structure
allows Fellini to delve into his past, with visits from Marcello Mastroianni and Anita
Ekberg and profound remembrances of La Dolce Vita. "An enchanting work, a
magical mixture of recollection, parody, memoir, satire, self-examination, and joyous
fantasy with Fellini himself as the master of ceremonies" (Vincent Canby, New York
Times). DVD includes an interview with Charlotte Chandler, co-author of
I, Fellini, and feature commentary by American Film Institute
official Ken Wlaschin. Italian with English subtitles.
109 minutes.
