Directed by Luchino Visconti
One of Luchino
Visconti's greatest films--luscious, operatic, and an extraordinary portrait of a decadent
and corrupt aristocracy. Set in Venice of 1866, Alida Valli plays an Italian countess who
falls in love with an Austrian officer (Farley Granger). When war breaks out, she is torn
between her patriotism and her emotional obsession with the officer. Visconti portrays a
milieu in which "Livia's seduction and treachery and Franz's cowardice and deceit are
an inevitable result of their environment." Italian with English subtitles.
