Directed by Roberto Rossellini
extraordinarily-rarely seen late film by Rossellini which is his
historical treatment of the Greek philosopher Socrates opens in 404 BC
after the conquest of Athens by Sparta. The philosopher becomes
increasingly unpopular as his former student Critias makes repressive use
of his power. The tyrant is overthrown but Socrates is still perceived as
a societal threat and must eventually stand trial as a subversive. With
Jean Sylvere and Anne Caprile. Italian with English subtitles.
