Kirk Douglas stars as Homer's seafaring hero in this lavish Italian costume drama. The film is sheer spectacle and certainly won't please serious students of The Odyssey, but it is a good example of the kind of studio epics that were so successful in the 1950s. Producer Dino de Laurentiis, recognizing the genre's popularity in Hollywood as well as Italy, brought several American screenwriters (including Ben Hecht) to the project to ensure its international appeal.
