"Men Who Tread on Tiger's Tail"
1945
Directed by Akira Kurosawa
A very offbeat
Kurosawa film, an adaptation of a popular Kabuki drama about a 12th-century lord who is
forced to flee his estate with only six dedicated samurai to guard him. He is hunted by
his brother, the Shogun, and is ultimately saved by his chief vassal through a clever
disguise. The wartime Japanese government banned the film because it didn't extol the
concepts of feudalism and obedience; after the war, the Allied Occupation forces banned it
for being pro-feudal. Japanese with English subtitles.
