"Chi-Hwa-Seon"
("Painted Fire")
2002
Directed by Im Kwon-Taek
Renowned Korean director Im Kwon-Taek presents a dramatized look at the life
of legendary 19th century Korean artist Ohwon in this studied, beautifully
composed film. Born a peasant, Ohwon (Choi Min-Skik) uses his talents to
escape poverty, eventually earning notoriety for his ability to intricately
copy famous Chinese paintings. His fame cannot help him win the heart of a
noble's daughter, though, and when she marries another, the destitute Ohwon
becomes a drunken wanderer in search of true art. "...a stirring, poetic
portrait of the creative process" (Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood
Reporter). Korean with English subtitles. 117
minutes. |
