"El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le
Escriba (No One Writes to the Colonel)"
1999
Directed by Arturo Ripstein
Legendary Mexican auteur Arturo Ripstein (Deep
Crimson) directs this drama based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia
Marquez. A retired colonel (Fernando Lujan) waits in vain for his government
pension and travels to the docks each day dressed in his finest to wait for
its delivery. Everyone in the small coastal town knows the pension will
never arrive, as does the Colonel, yet he refuses to give up hope. A
remarkable study of a man's inner strength that has been damaged by years of
waiting. Salma Hayek appears briefly as a prostitute who has an affair with
the colonel's son. Spanish with English subtitles.
118 minutes. |
