Stellan Skarsgard, stars as Jonas, a veteran Swedish investigator who is working in Oslo, after being dismissed from his job in Sweden for having "intimate conversation" with a witness.   When Jonas accidentally shoots his partner, he takes advantage of a situation to blame the killing on the escaped criminal he is persuing.  A cerebral thriller, director Erik Skjoldbjaerg, uses a pallette  of drab browns and greys to give the film a gritty feeling.  ""Crime and Punishment'' comes to mind.."  Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.  "Dazzlingly accomplished.  Rich with Hitchcockian trickiness."  Entertainment Weekly.  "Psychic and emotional darkness are played out against a background of unremitting light."  Jay Carr, The Boston Globe.   "Formidable.  Insomnia is virtually flawless as it builds inexorable to a finish as impossible to predict as it is satisfying."  Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times.
