"The Departure"
1991
Directed by Piotr & Magdalena Lazarkiewicz
This tense social drama stars acclaimed Polish
actress Teresa Budzisz-Krzyanowska (White) in her award-winning
role as a woman of German ancestry who lives in the Mazurian Lake district
of Poland. Never at home in Poland, she wants her daughter to take her
back to Germany, which she considers her true homeland. The daughter,
however, considers herself Polish and does not take her mother's wishes
too seriously, until she wakes up one morning to find her mother packed
and ready for departure. Directed by Piotr and Magdalena Lasakiewicz (White
Marriage), the film was the first to seriously examine the ethnic
differences in the Mazurian Lake region. The film also features well-known
Polish actor Henryk Bista (The Decalogue).
Polish with English subtitles. 115 minutes.
