"My Name is Ivan"
1962
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky
Winner of the Golden
Lion at the Venice International Film Festival (1962), this is a new print of the first
feature film directed by the great Andrei Tarkovsky. Set during WW II, it is the
story of a young boy who is deprived of his childhood and struggles with the brutal
realities of war. A beautiful work, filled with poetic flourishes and a permeating
melancholy, My Name is Ivan immediately placed Tarkovsky in a position of
leadership among the young Soviet filmmakers of his era. The film contains many
images that would later become his trademark, and is a poetic evocation of innocence lost
in the face of war. Starring Kolya Burlaiv, Valentin Zubkov, Ye
Zharikov. Black and white. Russian with English subtitles.
84 minutes. |
