"Secrets of Women"
1952
Directed by Ingmar Bergman
This film is a composite of vignettes that bring four
women, each involved in a relationship with one of four brothers, together. They sit
around a cozy country cottage, waiting for the arrival of the brothers and recount
intimacies about their relationships. A younger woman, secretly planning her
elopement, is listening distantly to the each woman's story. Bergman enters into his
famous dreamlike sequences to set the stage for each woman, who finds a certain catharsis
in relating her tale. Meanwhile, the rich experiences and lessons learned fall on
the deaf ears of the younger woman, who can only think of her love. Swedish
with English subtitles. 108 minutes. |
