The war follows a brilliant young couple, both violinists, attempt to evade a long-raging civil war by retreating to an island off the coast, when  they are  charged with collaborating with the enemy. A visually spare, emotionally powerful work about hopelessness, betrayal and human weakness. With Liv Ullmann, Max Von Sydow and Gunnar Bjornstrand. Cinematography by Sven Nykvist. Swedish with English subtitles. Black and white.  102 minutes.
